Earlier this year, Mary-Kate Olsen filed for divorce from her husband of five years, Olivier Sarkozy. Their split almost immediately became very messy. For starters, while newly single Mary-Kate attempted to file an emergency divorce request in April, New York courts were not accepting divorce filings at all due to the ongoing health crisis.
The situation quickly escalated, with Mary-Kate claiming that her ex's lawyers emailed her own team to inform her that she needed to move out of their shared home by May 18 — in the middle of the pandemic.
The details of the pair's split only got messier as the summer progressed, but now it sounds like Mary-Kate has turned a corner. A source recently shared that the star is doing just fine, thank you very much. "She's single and having fun. She's not seriously with anyone, but she's dating. She's doing great and seems happier than she's been in a long time."
Mary-Kate and Olivier got married in 2015 after dating for three years. Much was made of their expansive age difference, but neither appeared to be that bothered by public opinion. In fact, Mary-Kate said as much at the time:
"Everyone has an opinion. I find it's better to focus on what's in front of you and to keep putting one foot in front of the other."
Mary-Kate's emergency divorce request offered a few details about her pressing situation back in April:
"This application is an emergency because my husband expects me to move out of our home on Monday, May 18, 2020, in the middle of New York City being on pause due to [the virus]. I am petrified that my husband is trying to deprive me of the home that we have lived in and if he is successful, I will not only lose my home but I risk losing my personal property as well."
"My husband is trying to force me out of our home by his failure to renew the lease on the Gramercy Apartment which he terminated without my consent. This is impossible given the pandemic. It is also impossible for me to find a new apartment on such short notice."
While Olivier is reportedly worth an estimated $60 million, his attornies argued that he couldn't budget for the apartment because he is "not in a position to extend it and/or pay additional rent."
Speaking of money, Mary-Kate also requested that the prenup she and Olivier signed be strictly enforced.
Mary-Kate and twin sister Ashley are estimated to be worth a staggering $500 million, so it makes sense that she would want to ensure her wealth remains untouched by her ex. A source confirmed that Mary-Kate's money is totally fine:
"Her business interests and fortune are protected."
Many people have speculated about why the marriage ended in the first place. This summer, a friend of the couple put their split down to different values:
"She's super career-focused and he's very French and wanted her to be more available. You can't control a girl who has been on the billionaire track since her 20s."
Some sources have also indicated that the trouble between Mary-Kate and Olivier really heated up when he brought his ex-wife over to the US from France … to live in one of the homes he and Mary-Kate shared:
"Olivier was concerned for the safety of his family in New York during the pandemic. He insisted to Mary-Kate that he wanted to bring his ex-wife, their kids, and his mother from the city to their Bridgehampton home."
The source continued, "Maybe French people culturally have a different view of marriage, and while Mary-Kate loves his children, it was too much to have his ex-wife living with them during the pandemic. Would you want the ex-wife living with you for an unforeseeable amount of time in the middle of a crisis?"
This is a particularly salient point, since Olivier's ex-wife described his marriage to Mary-Kate as "grotesque."
However, another source explained that the plan to move in his ex-wife and their children was just the next step for Olivier after Mary-Kate left:
"It was simply erosion … growing apart. No cheating or betrayals … sometimes couples just run their course. The plan to move in his family was his way of moving on, and the final straw for Mary-Kate."
Mary-Kate reportedly spent some weeks after the divorce announcement at her sister's home, but she is believed to be back in New York City this fall. She was recently photographed walking around the city with a friend, and she looked to be in good spirits.
