They Met Under Heartbreaking Conditions, Now They Share A Special Bond

High school can be rough for a lot of kids. It's a weird time in your life when you are figuring out who you are and what you want to be…and it changes weekly. You have so much to look forward to after high school, and at the same time, a lot that can stress you out when looking towards the future. When you finally get to graduation time, it should be one of the happiest moments of your young adult life.

Kazzie Portie, an 18-year-old recent high-school graduate, was ready for graduation day months ahead of time. He knew which college he was going to attend, what he would study,  and who would be sitting in the audience cheering him on during the graduation ceremony…until that all changed a little less than a week before the big day, when Lt. Eric Ellison showed up to his parents front door with life-changing news.

Lt. Ellison was the first respondent to the devastating call when Kazzie's parents were struck and killed  by a drunk driver, and he was also the person who was responsible for breaking the news to the boy he now lovingly refers to as "Kazz."

Like the detective who took in two young boys in trouble, Lt. Ellison knew he had to help Kazz in this extremely tough time. Sticking by his side and encouraging Kazz to follow through with his plans, Lt. Ellison did his best to fill in the empty space left by Kazz's parents during graduation and was the first person to congratulate him as he walked across the stage.

Kazz has since said that he still plans to attend college and that Lt. Ellison will forever be a part of his life.
