Little Boy Asks People To ‘Shine A Light’ To Remember His Soldier Father

Staff Sergeant Thomas Baysore was a true American hero. The fallen soldier lost his life in Afghanistan on September 26, 2013 — a day his that tragically changed the lives of his wife, Jamie, and young son, Darren.

Darren's dad was his best friend and his idol. Baysore would always tell his young son, "I love you to the moon and back." While he was away on deployment he told his son Darren, who was around 5-years-old at the time, to always look up and talk to the moon, to be closer to him. Just like in this family's heartbreaking story of losing their hero, Baysore couldn't keep the promise that he would return home, but he did assure his son that he would always be with him.  For Darren, knowing his dad was looking up at the same moon gave the little boy great comfort.

Since his father's death, Darren now asks his mom to leave their porch light on every night, so his Dad can look down and know he's always being remembered. On the first anniversary of Baysore's death, the 6-year-old asked friends and neighbors to join him by leaving their porch lights on to remember the fallen soldier. The response was overwhelming. On Facebook, people from all over the world posted photos of their porch lights on.

Even overseas in Afghanistan, at least one soldier strung lights in his bunk to remember Baysore. Jamie Baysore says it has been a very rough year for her young son and that this wonderful memorial has finally given Darren his smile back.

The fact that this little boy has gone through so much pain in his short lifetime, yet is still able to do something so incredible for his father, is beyond moving.
