When I was 4, my preschool "boyfriend" and I were sure that we were going to get married someday.
We're still best friends, but there's definitely no wedding in our future. Many people remember similar experiences from preschool: having a sweetheart and planning your future wedding.
Kids love playing pretend, so it's no surprise that having a pretend relationship would seem fun. Almost always, these preschool "couples" turn into nothing more than a sweet memory.
For one preschool couple, though, their future held something a little different.
Like this now-married couple, Laura and her preschool beau went separate ways when they went to elementary school, and they lost touch with one another.
But they never forgot about each other. They reconnected as teenagers, years after they began their preschool relationship, and decided to meet up.
They were immediately infatuated with one another all over again. Before they knew it, they were back in a relationship.
Laura's love explained to the Instagram page The Way We Met:
Laura and I met in preschool.
One of my very first memories is of being 3 years old and standing up in front of my preschool class, declaring that I would marry her someday.
As kids, Laura taught me how to ride the swings, draw rolling hills, and the ‘right way’ to properly eat string cheese.
We have fond memories of playing hide-and-go-seek, chasing after each other on the playground, and mischievously staying up during nap time.
I was enamored with Laura as a child, and I still am to this day.
Eventually, we lost touch upon entering our Elementary School days and for the next seven years, our family's annual Christmas cards [sic] was the only way we ever saw each other's faces.
It wasn’t until High School that we reconnected by happenstance through a mutual friend.
Within two weeks, we decided to be boyfriend and girlfriend.
We continued to date through out all of High School, even though we went to different schools.
We even stuck together long-distance while attending colleges in different states.
We remained a resilient couple until May 23, 2015, when I decided to stay true to my preschool pledge and make Laura my wife.
I proposed to her at the place it all began… our preschool classroom.
Matt told LittleThings:
I convinced Laura that we were going to a picnic at the preschool. We had just finished up our junior year of college and we were going to separate schools in different states so I framed it as a nice relaxing date.
She didn't know that I had bought the ring two months earlier and talked with her dad earlier that week. I picked Laura up from her parents house on May 23, 2015 to go to the preschool. Laura had no idea that I had already dispatched my younger brother, Ben, to the preschool, where he was hiding out to catch the moment on camera.
The whole car ride to the preschool, she kept asking me why I seemed anxious. I kept checking my pocket when she wasn't looking to make sure the ring was still there.
When we got to the preschool I walked Laura over to the grass and simultaneously texted my brother “Go.” I dropped down on one knee while my brother came in with the phone, snapping photos. Laura was shocked.
I gave her my pitch on why I wanted her to marry me and she said yes — whew! Ben brought over a picnic basket that my parents had had when my dad proposed to my mom. In it was some sparkling cider, snacks, and wedding dress magazines.
We got married on December 30, 2016, at the Arizona Historical Society, in Papago Park.
We had our reception at The Culinary Dropout Showcase Room in Tempe. My brother, Ben, was my Best Man; Laura's sister, Molly, was her Maid of Honor.
We recently got a dog named Kirby and are living happily ever after.
