In news that will hardly surprise anyone who has been following along, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced several changes to how they intend to live their lives as royals.
In a post on Instagram, the two began by explaining:
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen.”
The post continued:
“It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages.”
Prince Harry and Meghan have dealt with a huge onslaught of press attention that has veered into the negative and possibly dangerous in the short time they’ve been together, and this announcement follows their recent seven-week stay abroad in Canada.
The statement continued, "This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity."
The pair continued, "We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support."
Harry and Meghan recently returned to royal duties and met with Canada House in London after their trip, ostensibly to thank them. Their post began, "Today, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited Canada House in London to thank the High Commissioner Janice Charette and staff for the warm hospitality during their recent stay in Canada."
The post about Canada House continued, "The Duke and Duchess have a strong connection to Canada. It’s a country The Duke of Sussex has visited many times over the years and it was also home to The Duchess for seven years before she became a member of The Royal Family."
Prince Harry and Meghan have seemed to grow weary in their time together, as they have been repeatedly slammed for nearly every decision they've made. It's been thought that this move would come for quite some time.
Undoubtedly, the two want to balance the time they spend with Harry's family and with Meghan's, and they also want to work hard to secure safety and security for themselves and for baby Archie. It is assumed that Harry and Meghan have the full backing and understanding of the entire royal family.
