Couple Expecting Quadruplets Face Impossible Decision When One Of The Fetuses Is In Danger

Cardenas and David Gutierrez married in 2011 with family on the brain as Cardenas was pregnant on the day of their wedding. But the young couple truly had no idea what was ahead for them in the years to follow.

Cardenas worked as a successful interior designer in South Florida, while David was a chef with plans of opening his own restaurant. Even though they were career-minded, starting a family was at the forefront of their minds.

When Cardenas went in for her initial scan, it was discovered that there was not just one fetus growing inside her belly, but she was expecting twins. The couple was happy to hear this news, but it didn’t stop there.

The doctor soon announced to them that Cardenas was actually pregnant with quadruplets. The couple was so overwhelmed by this news that they both erupted in tears.

“I thought they were trying to prank me,” Cardenas told CBS 4 Miami. Even though the couple were motivated to start a family, they had never taken any fertility drugs. Cardenas being pregnant with quads was only a one in 700,000 chance.

The couple knew that since Cardenas was pregnant with four babies, there was an increased risk throughout her pregnancy. Unfortunately, 27 weeks into her pregnancy, it was discovered that one of the fetuses wasn’t getting enough oxygen to the placenta.

The doctors told the couple that Cardenas could carry on with her pregnancy as long as her body allowed and face the likely possibility that one of the fetuses wouldn’t make it. Or they could perform a procedure and get the babies out prematurely.
