In a historic first, the eight grandchildren of Queen Elizabeth united today to stand vigil at her coffin. This is the first time a monarch's grandchildren have ever stood vigil following the death of a king or queen.
Princes William and Harry were joined by their cousins Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice, Lady Louise Windsor and James, Viscount Severn, and Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips.
The room was completely silent as the grandchildren began their approach toward the coffin, save only for the rhythm of their footsteps hitting the ground in unison. Prince William led the procession and took his spot at the head of Queen Elizabeth's coffin.
He was followed by his brother, Prince Harry, who stood at the coffin's foot. The group of eight stood vigil for 15 minutes.
A royal source told People, "The grandchildren, at the King's invitation, are very keen to pay their respects — just as their parents are doing the evening before."
