Rare Identical Triplets Born On Long Island

Last December, when she went to see her doctor, 33-year-old Kelli Fenley was told that she was having twins. But when she returned a week later, it seemed there had been a bit of a mix-up.

During a followup, the doctors revealed that Fenley needed to make room for one more baby — because she was actually pregnant with triplets! She spent more than 50 days in the hospital leading up to the delivery.

On July 1, identical triplets Owen, Noah, and Miles Fenley arrived at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, Long Island. They weighed less than three pounds each. The parents already have a 2-year-old named Aiden.

"I always say, instead of hitting the money lottery, we hit the genetic lottery," dad Jason Fenley told NBC. "Which is just as good."

According to Dr. Martin Chavez, Chief of Maternal Fetal Medicine and the Fetal Surgery Program at Winthrop University Hospital, only one in every 1 million deliveries results in the birth of identical triplets.

Each triplet has a toenail painted a different color so their parents can tell them apart. The triplets are definitely a handful, but the couple was delighted to take their three healthy babies home.
