Rihanna is a powerhouse of a human being. The 32-year-old seems to do it all. She's a musical icon who has fans literally harassing her for her next album. It's been four years since her last album, Anti.
She's been very busy in those four years. She's built her Fenty brand into an unstoppable force. Fenty Beauty launched in 2017, and it was valued as a $3 billion dollar business as of 2018. That year, Savage X Fenty launched, marking Rihanna's move into fashion.
Rihanna's life is nonstop. She's on the cover of May's British Vogue, making her the first person to ever grace the cover in a do-rag. In the interview, Rihanna discusses her future as she envisions it. She reveals that her perpetual grind has a purpose. She's hoping to work hard now so she can slow down in the next decade. Rihanna reveals she pictures herself becoming a mom at some time in those 10 years, regardless of her relationship status.
Rihanna's life is nonstop. Need proof? The 32-year-old claims to sleep in "pockets," which she feels are more compatible with her creative rhythms. Her professional prowess is a big focus in her interview with British Vogue, whose cover she graces on the May issue.
Rihanna opens up a lot in the interview. She reveals that despite having been in the industry since she was 15 years old, she still gets nervous attending events. That's why she lives low-key, dividing her time between Barbados, London, Mexico, and Paris.
She even dropped some subtle hints about her long-awaited ninth album. Fans constantly bring it up anytime the star makes headlines, and twice as much when she doesn't.
"I can’t say when I’m going to drop," she says. "But I am very aggressively working on music."
During the interview, Rihanna also reflects on where she is in her life. She recently got out of a long relationship with Saudi billionaire businessman Hassan Jameel. Since then, her attitude has shifted, and she's become more aware of what stage in life she's in.
"Since I turned 32, I’m realising life is really short," she notes in the magazine.
"You don’t have a lot of time to tolerate [expletive], you know? You put so much on your plate," she says.
"When you’re overwhelmed, you need to start cutting things out. And I’m overwhelmed too much."
"What’s happening now is that I’m going back to black and white," she continues. "My grey area is shutting down."
That said, she's traded partying for working hard and, occasionally, playing hard simultaneously. Her team matches her energy and her tenacity.
"I’m working like this now so that I don’t have to in the future," Rihanna says. "I know I will want to live differently."
The difference to her is children, which she definitely sees in her future, ideally sometime in the next 10 years.
"Ten years? I’ll be 42! I’ll be ancient," she jokes of the upcoming decade. "I’ll have kids – three or four of ’em."
Rihanna also says that she's open to that happening in any number of ways.
"I feel like society makes me want to feel like, 'Oh, you got it wrong,'" she notes.
"They diminish you as a mother if there’s not a dad in your kids’ lives. But the only thing that matters is happiness, that’s the only healthy relationship between a parent and a child. That’s the only thing that can raise a child truly, is love."
It's the love of her own family, both biological and found, that has taught her this important lesson. She admits that Fenty Beauty is inspired by her own mother. She recalled watching her mom meticulously apply makeup.
"My mom pretty much worked in the beauty and perfume industry for a long time — she did makeup for people and was a makeup artist — so I always loved that," she said to Interview magazine in 2019.
In that same interview, Rihanna was asked about motherhood. When asked if she wanted to become a mother, she replied, "More than anything in life." She also noted her close relationship with her little cousin, Majesty.
Rihanna has been known to fuel pregnancy rumors. Her fluctuating weight has kept fans guessing as to when the first living Rihanna creation will come into the world. For a woman who has conquered so much else, it will surely come as second nature.
