Sometimes, it may seem like change doesn't come easy when it comes to dealing with local government. However, there is one 11-year-old girl who is willing to take the time and effort to make her community safer for everyone.
Ryann Doyle of Shawnee, KS, noticed that the road on the way to the town's park was a busy one, but there were no sidewalks leading pedestrians to the public space. The cars zoom by bicyclists with only a narrow window of space between them, and walking on the side of the road is even more dangerous. This arrangement is a disaster waiting to happen, possibly even a fatal one.
This 11-year-old girl has serious concern for not just her own safety, but that of fellow residents. So she spent three months getting enough signatures to bring a petition to her local government, hoping that it agrees with her.
This small act shows that sometimes, all it takes to make a change is a bit of effort and a whole heap of passion. There was nothing that made Doyle fight for this change besides her concern for others' safety. Now that's pretty amazing for an 11-year old kid, don't you think?
Since she turned in her petition, the council has voted to consider her plea for a safer path to the park, and hopefully this young woman's dream of public safety will come true.
But, if no change is made when revisiting the issue? I'd put my money on Doyle trying again and again until a change is made. If only there were more young folks like her around, then we'd be living in a better world!
