Dr. Travis Groth from the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin has come up with an unconventional way to make his young patients happy. Groth ensures that the children's stuffed animals get the same surgeries they do.
Every child that goes under the knife is allowed to bring in their favorite toy. Groth kindly takes time out of his day to perform things like open heart surgeries on Batmans and stuffed Elmos.
The kids take solace in knowing that their favorite toys are going through exactly what they do.
"When I operate, I will wear surgical loops, which are magnifying glasses, so I just kept those on and sewed up his arm with extra stitches and used the normal operating instruments," Groth says in the video below. "By seeing that their toys underwent a procedure as well, I think it just brightens up their day."
These children are battling serious conditions and often have to grapple with things many adults don't. The small comfort can do wonders for the healing process.
Moreover, it's simply great to know when your doctor really cares about your well-being.
“When he woke up, he saw his best buddy also kind of patched up and had bandages around him, so he felt like he was on the same page with him,” says Tony Jasen, the father of one of Groth's patients.
