Melissa Cook agreed to be the paid surrogate mother for a single father. The father asked Cook to carry triplets to term for him. However, a few weeks into the pregnancy, the man changed his mind. He allegedly asked that Cook abort one of the triplets because he could only afford to take care of two children. Cook couldn't believe the request. The father could not legally force the surrogate mom to get an abortion, so Cook carried all three of the babies to term.
After the triplets were born, the nurse whisked them away and handed them off to the biological father. Cook began to have concerns that the single father, who is deaf and lives with his elderly parents, may not be fit to care for the three children. While the law works in favor of the parent the children were intended to be with, Cook is hoping to reform California's surrogacy laws so that they work in favor of the children's best interest.
"My concern has always been for the welfare of the children and what is best for them," Cook told People. "My goal is to take responsibility to raise any child C.M. [the father] can’t raise and seek a resolution for the placement of the other child or children based on what is in their best interests."
The controversial subject has caused some polarizing opinions. Some believe that Cook did not fulfill her duty as a surrogate by getting too involved, while others believe she has a right to step in if she feels there is wrongdoing. As the court case is still ongoing, what do you believe is best for the triplets?
