Elderly Mom Loses Her Son. Months Later, A Group Of Women In Red Surprise Her At Senior Center

Gayle Schreiber is a singer in the Champlain Valley Sweet Adelines, a singing troupe that, every year around Valentine's Day, serenades strangers, couples, families, and friends with a plethora of love songs. But this year, Schreiber wanted to have a special surprise serenade, one for a very special member of her family.

Beatrice "Bea" Schreiber, 89 years old,  lives in the Meadowbrook Healthcare Center in Plattsburgh, New York.

This past Friday, February 10, Bea and her friends were relaxing in the common room of the center when they received an unexpected surprise.

A group of women, dressed in red, arrived, and right there with her was her daughter, Gayle. The Sweet Adelines wanted to perform for the residents of the center.

"She's been going through some tough times; she lost her son a few months ago," Gayle said. "I just wanted to cheer her up and let her know she was loved."

For the Sweet Adelines, this is the busiest time of year, but they were still able to put on a show for Bea and her friends.

"I can't sing, but I love to hear it. (It's been the) best day since I've been here," said 100-year-old Virginia Aley.

"It was wonderful. I love music and I love to hear it," echoed 81-year-old Margaret Matton.

Bea said it’s the best surprise she’s ever received. “I’m very surprised. I’m very happy. I’m just happy to be with her,” she said, embracing her daughter Gayle.

The power of music can do anything!
