There's an awesome movement taking shape in the city of Detroit. Homeless teens are joining in the cause to rescue abandoned dogs in need. Not only does this serve the stray animals of Detroit, but the program also provides amazing lessons in guardianship for the kids.
In the video below, a 16-year-old boy named Mikey helps the Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue take care of and rescue a stray pit bull. They come upon an unoccupied house with a young mother dog living inside.
The children who work with the program were found living on the streets themselves. They know firsthand what the thousands of stray dogs in Detroit go through on a daily basis. The kids are animal lovers, and as the rescue team points out, they could easily be selling the dogs they find to be used as bait dogs. Instead, they choose to do the right thing and hand the dogs over to people who can give them their second chance at life.
By the end, I was in tears. "Is this something you want to continue to do?" the cameraman asks Mikey.
"Oh yea," he says before quickly adding, "Don't bully the breed."
