High school graduation is a joyous time for everyone — parents, teachers, and students alike. It’s the culmination of hard (sometimes grueling) work, but the relief one feels after finally making it through is unlike anything else.
That’s why JP Wallace, a graduate of Lapeer High School’s class of 2016 in Michigan, decided to leave his mark on his alma mater in a unique way. And boy, did he succeed! I don’t think anyone will soon forget a performance like this one.
As the camera begins rolling, Wallace walks onto the stage with his microphone at the ready — much like this incredible performance by high school graduates in Hawaii, or the one that took place in a pool! Here, though, the piano begins playing just as he steps into position and the first few notes are immediately recognizable.
It’s Lukas Graham's “7 Years,” the smash hit song that continues to top the charts. And when Wallace opens his mouth to sing the first verse, the crowd is mesmerized by his sweet, unexpected mature voice. For a young man graduating high school, he sounds like a pro!
And his words seem familiar at first:
It was a big big world, but we thought we were bigger
Pushing each other to the limits, we were learning quicker
By eleven we all wanted to grow older quicker
And all our lives we couldn’t wait until our senior year
Wait, wait. That’s right — He wrote new lyrics! In a clever twist, Wallace customized the song to fit the experience of everyone and the result was deeply moving.
