The bond between a father and his son is a miraculous one.
Thomas Barnett and his WWII veteran dad, Robert Barnett Jr., were an unbreakable pair.
In the video below, posted on April 6, 2017, Thomas explains how he was overwhelmed by his dad's death. He breaks down in tears, still grieving the fresh passing of his father.
But the day after he lost his beloved dad, he made a discovery that helped ease the pain.
Thomas reached into the jacket pocket of his late father's military uniform. He pulled out a piece of paper that turned out to be an old letter — which, as it turned out, was addressed to him. Suddenly, everything shifted.
"I had seen a letter that he wrote to me and you know, a beautiful short letter. It was just — just amazing. Kind of, um, a lot of closure," Thomas said, recalling the moment he read the old letter his WWII veteran dad had handwritten for him in 2012.
Thomas gushed, "He loved life, so it's hard to let go."'
He adds: "We'd visit and he'd touch me and say, 'I got you last' or he'd hit my car and say, 'I got you last.' I'd stop the car and run around behind him and touch him and run back in the car — and I think now, he's got me last."
Although Robert is no longer with his family, Thomas still has the memories and a very special letter to keep his dad in his heart forever. "He's an American hero — he's my hero. He's, you know, the hero of our family."
