A Texas mother had a Mother's Day she will truly never forget.
Not only did Betzabeth Perez give birth on Mother's Day, but she did so in a flash … in a hospital elevator. The situation occurred when Betzabeth and her partner, Adolfo Soto, arrived at Medical City Dallas. There they were greeted by security guard Eli Davila.
When Eli saw that Betzabeth was in labor, he acted fast. He got her into a wheelchair and rushed her into the elevator. In the security camera footage, just before she gets in, Betzabeth can be seen looking very uncomfortable and shifting in her seat. By the time she gets out, her baby has arrived.
When security guard Eli Davila was wheeling Betzabeth Perez into a hospital elevator, he had no idea what he and Betzabeth's partner, Adolfo Soto, were about to experience. By the time the elevator had gone up a few short stories, Betzabeth had given birth to her daughter.
Eli moved her as quickly as possible, but some moments in life simply can't wait. Now he hopes to be in the child's life for the long haul.
"No medical training whatsoever; it was just one of those things where you watch all this TV, and you just put it into practice right now," Eli told news station WFAA.
"The baby started crying, and the mom got calm, and I told them everything was going to be fine and that the worst was over."
"I want to be part of the baby's life, and celebrate Mother's Day and birthdays, coming along as she grows," the security guard, who is a father himself to two adult children, shared.
"Seems to me like she's going to be another one of my kids."
Jay DeVenny, CEO of Medical City Children’s Hospital and Medical City Women’s Hospital Dallas, praised Eli's quick thinking.
"Eli's quick assessment and willingness to help a patient in need takes 'other duties as assigned' to a new level and speaks to our colleague's commitment to delivering excellent care," he said.
Eli got to meet baby Mia officially when mom and dad were able to bring her home. He looked overjoyed to see the little girl and her mom happy and healthy.
"Bringing a baby into this world and having a part in it — it's just really crazy," he said.
