Stranded Woman Starts Forest Fire To Get Help After Giving Birth In Woods

This story is almost too crazy to believe. Seriously, I've never heard anything like it!

35-year-old Amber Pangborn was nine months pregnant when she started to go into labor. She was driving by herself in northern California at the time. So, she remained calm as she headed up the highway to take a back road to her parents' house. Though her friends had shown her the shortcut before, she'd never actually driven it herself. The further she drove, the more she got lost. Eventually, her cell phone lost reception. Her car was running out of gas. And there was Amber, going into labor while completely lost in the Plumas National Forest. That's when things took a stunning turn.

Amber only had a few pieces of fruit and some water. In the midst of fighting off wasps and mosquitoes, and without anyone there to help her, Amber gave birth to a baby Marissa at 5 o'clock in the morning. Then, the bees came. “The meat bees came out and were trying to get the placenta. I was trying to get them not to sting her and I got stung trying to keep them away from the baby," she told CBS News. Amber was stung, but she shielded her baby from the insects. What. A. Nightmare.

Three days went by and Amber and baby Marissa were still stranded in the woods, living out of her car. She thought they were doomed to die out there, all alone. Miraculously, Amber managed to start a signal fire, and thankfully it was picked up by a U.S. Forest Service fire detection system. A few hours later, a rescue helicopter found the stranded survivors and sent a rescue team.

Amber and baby Marissa were admitted to the hospital for evaluation. It'll sure be tough for them to top their very first adventure together.
