When Zoe was barely 4 years old, her older brother went off for a five-year tour with the United States Army. That was back in 2007.
On Christmas of 2012, Zoe thought she still had to wait a few days to see her older brother for the very first time since she was just a preschooler. She was 9 years old at the time and in grade school. So much time had passed, it was possible she wouldn't even recognize her older brother if he were to appear right in front of her eyes.
Yet, when the door opened a few days earlier than she'd thought, her jaw dropped, and she very clearly recognized who was standing right in front of her, in the flesh.
Then, it was time for him to leave again.
Three more long years passed without seeing her brother face-to-face and without making memories with him. I can only imagine how scary and strange that must be — to know that you have an older sibling in danger somewhere very far away that you never get to spend time with.
Then, one day, she went to the airport to pick up a friend who needed a ride home. She paced around the waiting area, patiently, with no idea who was really about to walk through those doors.
When she sees a man wearing all black? Just look at her face! This is truly priceless.
