Zoë Kravitz has enjoyed being pretty popular in Hollywood in recent years. Her recent success in The Batman added to the fan base she grew through High Fidelity, Big Little Lies, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Now, however, the 33-year-old actress is getting some pretty serious backlash over her unsolicited comments about the events of the 94th Academy Awards. Everyone has been volunteering their opinions on Will Smith slapping Chris Rock over comments about Jada Pinkett Smith's hair, so it's not altogether surprising that Zoë decided to add her voice to the growing list of opinions out there.
What did surprise many, however, was how quick the public (particularly on Twitter) was to call Zoë out for her own less-than-perfect decisions over the years. Some of those allegations have gotten pretty serious, namely ones involving Will's 23-year-old son, Jaden Smith.
Zoë Kravitz's comments about the incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars came in the form of two Instagram posts that went over like lead. The posts were meant to showcase her fashion at the award shows, but she used them as an opportunity to discuss the night's hottest topic.
"here's a picture of my dress at the award show where we are apparently assaulting people on stage now," she captioned a photo of her pink Saint Laurent gown.
In her next photo, she showcased the white Saint Laurent gown she chose for the Vanity Fair after-party, with a high-neck and a plunging back.
"And here is a picture of my dress at the party after the award show -where we are apparently screaming profanities and assaulting people on stage now," she wrote, this time turning off comments on the post.
People didn't seem to think Zoë had the range to discuss the matter, considering some pretty bad indiscretions of her own. They pointed to her close friendship with designer Alexander Wang, who has been accused of sexual harassment and assault on multiple occasions. Though he initially denied any wrongdoing, he later apologized for his past behavior and vowed to learn and grow moving foward.
Zoë has never deemed it necessary to comment on accusations against Alexander Wang and continued her friendship with him despite mounting stories becoming public. The actress has also been accused of some inappropriate behavior of her own, with none other than Will Smith's son, Jaden Smith.
Twitter users also brought to light Zoë's comments in a 2013 interview with V Magazine about Jaden. She was 24 years old when she spoke about 14-year-old Jaden.
"There were moments that I was hanging out with Jaden and thinking, 'I can't believe you're 14, I have to check myself, like what I say to you,'" she said.
"He has so much personality and so much swag, he is so much cooler than I am," she continued.
"And he's so handsome, I was always like, 'when you're older, you know, we'll hang out … Nope, that's inappropriate, you're 14.'"
Interestingly, Jaden wrote a song about having a crush on a woman in her 20s called "Let It Breathe." In the song, he mentions being 14. It could be a coincidence, but in this context and with 2022 eyes, it certainly raises some red flags.
It wasn't long before another interview emerged where Zoë talked about texting a 16-year-old Jaden to go to an event with her and referred to him as "her date" and "the love of her life." She also pokes fun at his idea of a compliment at 16 years old, and it wouldn't seem so weird if you didn't know she was 26 herself at the time.
Zoë's dating history was also called into question. She dated Ezra Miller when the actor was 17 and she was 21. She also dated Michael Fassbender in 2011, after domestic abuse allegations against him surfaced. It's safe to say the actress did not expect a response quite like this with her comments. Now people are watching to see how she handles this mess.
