When Ryan McDermott, a Tempe, AZ, resident and artist, placed a brightly colored sign reading "Love" in his front yard, he had no idea the impact it would have on his community.
While he was hoping to spread some joy, he wasn't prepared for the landmark status that his art project would take on.
We all know what it's like when something becomes a part of the tapestry of our hometown. We get used to seeing it, and take comfort in the familiarity that comes with the sight.
So when such a landmark begins to fall into disrepair, it's immediately disappointing. There's often a part of you that just wants to fix it yourself.
So when McDermott's sign began to dim, an anonymous neighbor stepped in to make a difference. The neighbor, who'd come to love the sign, didn't want to see it go out. In turn, he left a note and an envelope filled with money for McDermott. He asked that McDermott use the money to repair the sign so that it could shine brightly on the corner once again.
McDermott quickly put aside all other projects and fixed the sign, making it even brighter in honor of the mysterious neighbor.
Now, this unlikely neighborhood landmark is back and better than ever for all to see.
