The Tiny House Movement has gained more and more momentum over the past few years as millions of Americans are discovering the financial and environmental benefits of tiny houses. They are usually much cheaper to construct, often don't require a mortgage, and are less costly to run.
Tiny houses have provided shelter to numerous homeless people in communities around the globe, and they've been a great help for retired couples looking to live life a little more cheaply.
Now? They're being built to withstand hurricanes.
When I first read about Cubicco, a Dutch design company that makes easy-to-build tiny houses out of cork and wood beams, I was intrigued. But when I learned that these beams can withstand category five hurricanes, I absolutely didn't believe it! Then I found out the raw materials start at just $17,000 — and I really couldn't believe it.
But it's all true! The State of Florida has given approval to this company to advertise their products as able to sustain a category five hurricane.
These sleek, efficient, and sustainable properties are available now and two model homes are available for view in Miami.

This "cabana" version of their modular homes only costs $17,000 for the construction materials. It's built to withstand major environmental changes in temperature, hurricanes, floods, and even extreme snowfalls.
It is built completely from natural resources, including laminated wood beams, rubber, and cork. They only use materials that are readily found and easily replenished.
The homes can be built in under three months.
It is important to the company that the houses are economically friendly and capable of being run on solar power.
…LOVE the daytime photos!
They are purposefully built to be affordable. The company believes that all families, regardless of income, have the right to homes that can withstand natural disasters.
Environmentally conscious customers can also customize their homes by adding rainwater harvesting, vertical gardening, geothermal systems, and solar panels.
They have floor pans for cabanas and studios, as well as one, two, and three bedroom houses.
Cubicco also works with developers interested in running rental properties. If customers have large land areas, they can build multiple Cubicco homes to rent.

They're definitely more modern-looking than one would expect a super-safe home to be. One might picture a giant concrete or metal box, but these houses are approved to withstand 180 mph winds.
Cubicco proudly states on its website that it aims to put human health and sustainable design at the top of their agenda — not profit.
This tiny house could be the future of hurricane preparedness.
