I think the best DIY projects are the ones that turn something old into something new and unexpected.
Transforming old items from garage sales and thrift stores into useful new DIY projects is a magical talent — like this 1970s medicine cabinet turned gorgeous side table.
DIY blogger Mamie Jane loves to find little treasures at flea markets, thrift stores and antique malls, and turns her fun finds into amazing DIY projects.
When Jane bought a pair of crutches for $2, they sat in her basement for over a year collecting dust. She absolutely loved the color of the wood, but had no immediate use for them — until inspiration struck!
She decided to turn the crutches into standing shelves, with just a few nails and some leftover wooden planks.

Jane bought these old wooden crutches for $2 over a year ago when she fell in love with the patina of the wood.
The first thing she did was remove the rubber caps at the end and saw off the round part of the wood.
On the ends of the crutches, she hinged them together.
She then flipped the crutches upside down — creating the perfect frame for shelves!
For the shelves themselves, she found four pieces of wood in different sizes from her leftover wood pile.
She screwed in the top shelves, and let the final shelf rest on the wood of the crutches.
She painted the mismatched pieces of wood all white to make them uniform in color.
With the addition of some charming knickknacks, her crutch shelves were coming together.
When she was done, her old crutches had been transformed into an eye-catching piece of furniture!
It's sure to be a conversation piece for anyone who walks in.
What a simple and beautiful DIY, made from such unexpected items!
