Decorating a child's room can be a fantastic opportunity to let your imagination run wild.
When Reddit DIY-er BrooklynEWD's son needed a new bed, this dad decided to design a spectacularly original spaceship loft bed.
This DIY-er created model designs for the bed himself, using Sketchup and Adobe Illustrator. He spent hours coordinating his ideal design for his son's room's compact square footage.
Additionally, this dad tried to include his son in the bed building process as much as possible. They even took a trip together to watch a CNC machine cut the bed's design out of wood — a chance to see raw ideas become tangible.
He also left parts of the bed bare. This way, as his son grows up, he can further develop the space himself, stamping it with his own creative touch.
This amazing bed has evolved into a perfect vessel for playtime, storing toys, impressing friends, and inspiring incredible dreams.

When Reddit DIY-er BrooklynEWD's son needed a new bedroom setup, this dad decided to build him a loft bed.
However, this wouldn't just be any old loft bed. It would be spaceship themed!
This DIY-er spent hours designing the bed, asking himself: If he were a 4-year-old, what his ideal design would look like?
Once his ideas were down on paper, he got to work bringing the project to life.
This DIY-er set up a makeshift wood shop in his Brooklyn apartment's bathroom.
Wooden pieces cut, his DIY-er began assembling the bed's frame.
He chose to include more 2×4 than one typically might on a lofted bed project like this, simply because he wanted to ensure the structure would be sturdy enough to keep his son safe at night.
Additionally, he wanted the bed to be strong enough to double as the entire family's go-to story time retreat.
Next, he began covering the frame in panels.
This dad designed these panels himself using Sketchup and Adobe Illustrator.
During this project, he wanted to give his son as many opportunities as possible to watch his bed come to life.
One of those opportunities included joining his dad at the wood shop to watch a CNC machine cut his dad's design out of 1/2-inch birch plywood.
His design pieced together swimmingly, and this bed was well on its way toward being the talk of toddler playgroups all over town.
Over the next few days, this dad worked diligently to sand, prime, and paint the bed.
He was able to bring the whole project to life by working every evening for seven days straight, while the rest of his family was out of town.
He added exceptionally clever touches all over the bed, starting with stenciled wording on its exterior in both English and the Star Wars language, Aurebesh.
Just through the bed's awesome circular door, this dad installed a custom-designed control panel straight out of a sci-fi movie.
This DIY-er added all sorts of fun buttons, switches, toggles, and lights to keep his son entertained for hours.
He even installed an iPad as the panel's screen.
If all the buttons and colors weren't enough to keep his son occupied for hours on end, this touchscreen surely would be.
All of the control panel details are inspired by both Star Wars book text as well as NASA space shuttle labels.
To map out this intricate panel ahead of time, this DIY-er put in many man hours researching each component's exact dimensions.
For many of them, the information he needed wasn't necessarily available prior to the parts' arrivals, so he had to keep an open mind and stay flexible with his design.
While most of this structure is decked out in fantastically detailed designs, this dad did want to leave a space for his son to make the bed his own.
He left this wall bare, in the hopes that when his son grows older, he and his son will be able to design this wall together.
Now, his son has an incredible place to play, learn, and grow right in his own bedroom.
When his son needed a new bed, this dad built him a completely enviable spaceship loft bed and play space, sure to keep his imagination active for hours on end.
