DIY Coffee Bar Gives Dining Room A Much-Needed Upgrade

Old homes have their charm, but they don't fit everyone's style. Some decorations and details that were popular 30 years ago just don't age well.

For those that have the minimalist, modern taste that's popular right now, older bulky furniture simply isn't making the cut. Although swapping out older pieces for newer, sleek options may look great, it can also cost a pretty penny.

What are DIY-ers to do? Fix it up themselves, of course!

We found a great example of a dining room upgrade on Imgur that is totally transformative and reasonably priced. The homeowner had an old shelving unit with mirrored backing and sliding glass doors that dated his eating area. He decided to give it a little upgrade.

What he created completely modernized the room and looks great!

Although this DIY-er's dining room looked okay, he decided it needed a bit of a makeover.

The shelves made his room look dated, and the heavy glass and mirrors didn't match the modern vibe he was going for.

He decided to switch out the boring shelves for a sleek looking coffee bar instead!

After removing all his glassware, he got to work.

He began by ripping out the mirrors, shelves, trim, and sliding glass doors.

This DIY-er wanted some accent lighting towards the top of the coffee bar.

He removed the entire shelving unit from the wall in order to add the electrical outlet he wanted.

After the electrical work was completed, he put the unit back into place.

The backing was still a bit sticky from the double-sided tape holding the mirror into place.

He sanded it down and cut open a small space on the side for the new outlet box.

Next, he chose a cool-toned color for his accent walls.

This color is also featured in his kitchen, so it matches the home well!

He then set up his new lighting and tested it out.

You can see that the setup already has a much more modern feel to it.

This next step was the hardest.

Apparently, working with chalkboard paint isn't an easy task!

It dries quickly and peels away if you don't work with the material fast enough, and it can tend to run.

With a bit of patience, however, this DIY-er managed to paint on a nice, clean slate.

Next, the hardware, trim, and shelf were put in.

Although it's a coffee bar, he decided to hang up the few wine glasses he had to add some character.

He was almost done now!

He added a bit of an artsy element with a clever little menu.
