When Instructables DIY-er lanleo found an expandable coffee table design he absolutely adored online, he knew he had to try to recreate it himself.
To get started, he gathered all the different materials he'd need to construct this dynamic piece of furniture.
In order to make sure every component of the table was interchangeable, no matter which way each piece was oriented at any given moment, he had to standardize his sizing.
He cut each piece during the same session, using the same guides, to increase the likelihood that each piece would be exactly the same size.
This DIY-er decided to build his table out of Baltic birch plywood.
Light-colored wood like this paired well with the table's modern look and feel.
To ensure each box incorporated into this table's design would be strong and sturdy, this DIY-er used dowels to join each piece of wood together.
In an effort to make this coffee table assembly as easy as possible, this DIYer made all sorts of interesting uses of his on-hand tools.
He clamped wooden pieces with a 90 degree groove to each box to expedite the gluing process.
In order to keep things neat and tidy during the messy gluing phase, this DIY-er covered each of the boxes in masking tape.
Once every box was assembled, this DIY-er used Dacron cord to stitch every piece together.
He found that joining the central boxes first, then slowly working his way out to the legs, was the best way to connect this whole table together.
After he touched each knotted cord with a flame to strengthen its seal, he further secured each connection with a cap nut and crimp sleeve.
Totally secure, this DIY-er had an amazing coffee table, expandable to suit any sort of guest arrangement.
This coffee table's sense of movement makes it an incredibly unique piece of home décor, and something that's sure to awe future guests.
Not only is this coffee table incredibly cool, but the fact that this DIY-er was able to find a design online and recreate it himself is an awesome accomplishment.
