Geometric Hive Serves As One-Of-A-Kind Herb Garden

Figuring out exactly how to make the most of any home's outdoor space can be an exciting challenge.

When Instructables DIY-er ratMoose purchased a new home, boasting a spacious backyard area, he set out to plant a garden of fresh veggies for his family to enjoy.

However, once he went out seed buying, inspiration struck. He decided that in addition to his raised vegetable garden beds, he would build a hanging herb garden. He'd position the herbs right by the yard-facing kitchen doorway for easy access.

Excited by his new idea, this DIY-er started searching the internet for interesting herb garden planter designs. But everything he found felt quite average.

Determined to build an herb garden that was both useful and true to his family's style, this DIY-er dove into the depths of his own imagination, ultimately conjuring up a perfect, hive-like hanging herb garden planter.

Scroll through below to see how you can make a hive herb garden of your very own!

While Instructables DIY-er ratMoose set out to make the most of his new home's backyard space, he was gifted a stroke of genius. He would build a hanging herb garden.

Armed with this project idea, he took to the internet, looking for possible designs.

However, as he researched, nothing he found felt quite right.

So, in true DIY fashion, he developed his own design, and got to work bringing it to life.

Not one for pen-to-paper style planning, this DIY-er used a good deal of hands-on trial and error to finalize his design plans.

With a limited number of preconceived steps to follow, this DIY-er troubleshooted as he went, figuring out this planter box's design on the fly.

The entire hanging planter would be made up of 21 individual planter modules.

He used a sample nursery pot to finalize the sizing of each individual module.

Each of the 21 hexagon-shaped modules in his design required five different pieces of wood.

To cut costs, he decided to upcycle used pallet wood, resourcefully repurposing supplies he already had on hand.

This crafty DIY-er streamlined his wood-cutting process by building his own makeshift table saw sled.

His sled made creating all the same cuts over and over again fast and simple.

Once he cut and sanded every small piece of wood, he was ready to assemble.

He assembled each module individually, carefully holding every wooden piece steady with tack nails while the adjoining wood glue set in place.

To break up this tedious process, this DIY-er assembled the overall structure in stages.

He would switch off between building the modules themselves and then positioning them in place in the larger structure.

Because this DIY-er exclusively used reclaimed wood in his design, some of the rows became unintentionally warped during the build.

Thus, to even out these areas, he had to apply more filler in certain places than he originally expected he'd need.

While this DIY-er was a fan of the planter's raw wood look, his wife preferred a more cohesive design.

Therefore, he coated the whole hive herb garden structure with a fresh coat of paint.

The hot pink hue he chose, juxtaposed with the budding green herbs, ended up being a beautifully vibrant color combination.

While this project may have taken a few tries to get going, this DIY-er certainly found his way toward an awesome end result.

He and his family now get to reap the benefits of having a gorgeous herb garden consistently at their disposal.

Dinners will likely never be the same again!

By harnessing his creativity, this DIY-er used materials he already had on hand and transformed them into a bold planter box that's both practical and beautiful.

With outdoor space to fill, this DIY-er created an exciting hive herb garden that his family will likely use for many years to come.
