I often look at the bare walls in my living room, and wonder if I should have started putting up pieces of art when I first moved in.
I don't like anything too elaborate or flowery. I definitely love a good piece of crayon wall art, but if I were to put up something on my walls, it would be a classic, simple, and elegant piece of artwork.
Luckily, my friends here at LittleThings have recently completed an absolutely stunning DIY project that has definitely made me want to replicate it at home.
In a photo tutorial below, we show you how to take an outline of your favorite American state, and turn it into a beautifully rustic piece of wall art.
All you need are some string, a hammer, small nails, a wooden board, and a few quick and easy-to-follow steps.

Here's what you'll need: a hammer and small nails, some string, a 12" x 12" wooden board, and a cut-out shape. We went with a state map of Georgia, but you can use any shape you like!
First, draw a little cute shape of your choice on the back of your cut-out. We went with the shape of a little heart.
After cutting out the shape, tape down the shape to the center of the board.
Next, use your hammer to secure the shape. Use the small nails to make a solid border.
Don't forget to outline your little cut-out shape with the nails, too!
After you've gone all the way around the border of the shape with the nails, you can pull it up.
This is what it should look like right after you've pulled up the shape.
To start tying the string, first tie a knot around the nail that you're going to start and finish with.
Wrap the string back and forth between the nails on the outer edge, and the nails that border the heart in the center. You'll have to repeat this many times.
Continue doing this, until you've looped the string all the way back to the nail that you start out with.
After you come back around to the first nail, you can trim off the excess string.
And there you have it! You will have completed a beautiful piece of work, all in the spirit of Americana art.
