Block Of Wood Transforms Into Fabulous Turquoise-Rimmed Bowl

Finding gorgeous raw materials can spawn the most amazing DIY crafting and project ideas.

When Imgur DIY-er Steakbellie found a pre-rounded and waxed piece of beautiful walnut wood on eBay, her woodworking wheels began turning.

She quickly decided this chunk of wood would make a fabulous decorative bowl, and got to work carving her dream into reality.

However, the wood's waxy finish, which at first she deemed a blessing, quickly proved itself to be, instead, an obstacle.

The wax made the wood slippery, and difficult to turn on her friend's lathe. The bowl-to-be ended up cracking under the stress.

This setback didn't rattle this DIY-er much, though. She carried on with the project, ultimately incorporating the bowl's cracks into its overall inlay design.

She carved out a channel along the bowl's rim, and filled it (and the bowl's cracks) with stunning turquoise bits — celebrating rather than hiding her mistake.

When Imgur DIY-er Steakbellie found a beautiful, pre-rounded and waxed piece of wood on eBay, on sale for only $30, she knew she had to pounce.

This wood was her perfect beginning to crafting her third decorative, turning bowl.

This DIY-er began her project much like other turning bowls she'd carved out of wood in the past — positioning her wood on a friend's lathe.

However, this wood responded differently than the rest.

It was quite slippery, due to its waxy coating.

On top of that issue, she was called away to work mid-process, without time to seal her project's ends.

This turn of events, unfortunately, caused a sizable crack to form along her project's edge.

However, not one to sweat the small stuff, this DIY-er decided to embrace the crack as part of this project's narrative, and weave it into her overall design.

She cut a channel along her bowl's rim, and began filling it with beautiful turquoise pieces.

She first glued the turquoise bits into the ridge, and then sanded them down — forming one seamless edge.

She ended up repeating this gluing and sanding process three times before the ridge was totally filled.

After a final sanding and Shellawax coating, her beautifully decorative bowl was complete!

This bowl's gorgeous turquoise rim really popped against the walnut wood, giving the entire piece stunning contrast.

The bowl's turquoise-filled cracks are a beautiful reminder that most mistakes are simply redirections toward a different, unexpectedly awesome outcome.

This DIY-er transformed a bland hunk of wood into a gorgeously decorative bowl.
