Sometimes, you know you don't really need a piece of furniture, but something about it keeps you hanging onto it.
Maybe it's sentimental, or maybe it's just a suspicion that with a little creativity, it can become something you need. Other times, it's a great way to take an obsolete piece of furniture and give it new life.
That's what happened when blogger and crafter Melissa Woods picked up an old entertainment cabinet for $10.
"These pieces of furniture have become almost obsolete as everyone upgrades to large flat screens," Woods explains, "but I had an idea to recreate this laminate loser into a useful storage solution for my daughter's bedroom."
Old, obsolete, or otherwise undesirable furniture is great for kids' rooms because it's not a big deal if they outgrow or damage it. Plus, it saves money. In fact, you can turn pretty much anything into a great child's play set with a little paint and a lot of imagination.
Check out what Woods did to turn a ho-hum cabinet into a great little organizational piece for her daughter, and if you have an old entertainment set, let her project inspire you to create something new and amazing!
[H/T: Welcome to the Woods ]
This was the entertainment center when Melissa Woods got started.
It wasn't much to look at and had space for a large TV, VCRs, and other items that simply aren't in use much anymore.
But that didn't mean this piece of furniture needed to be obsolete, too.
After giving the cabinet a good cleaning, Woods started her makeover by removing the black backing from the shelves. It was pretty unsightly with all the holes for various cables, and it had to go.
The shelves also needed to be rearranged to better fit her daughter's belongings. Conveniently, the cabinet had holes for different options.
Woods chose the heights that worked for her and used wood filler to patch up the holes she wouldn't use in the future.
Then, the cabinet and drawers got a few layers of paint. Woods opted for a light gray, which is a great neutral, but also modern, choice.
While the paint was drying, she made a backing for the shelves.
She used a piece of the ugly original backing and wrapped it in wedding wrapping paper, which matched the paint with silver and white stripes.
Instant (or, nearly instant) upgrade!
The original cabinet had a glass door, but Woods wanted a mirror. After finding the options to create a custom-length mirror too expensive, she took the simple route.
She bought a $5 mirror from Walmart and simply broke it in half! Then, she sealed the jagged edge with some clear nail polish and covered the whole thing with a wooden frame.
The mirror and frame were glued to the original glass door so they could be rehung easily.
With the door back on and a pole installed, it looks completely different!
Now, her daughter's things can be kept organized and easily found, and it's a great way to make sure a piece of furniture doesn't go to waste.
You would never guess that this had been a TV cabinet.
It's perfect for a child, too, since it's not too tall. Woods' daughter can get everything she needs, even from the top shelves.
As you can see here, she also painted the glass door to make it completely opaque and give everything a cleaner look.
It's also a great way to plan out outfits or swap out seasonal wardrobes, since the clothing is visible.
Woods is pretty proud of her transformation, but she's not the only one.
"More importantly," she says, "my little girl loves her new closet!"
Woods also only spent $26.20 on this project, with the bulk of it being spent on the entertainment cabinet itself ($10). It proves that a really stylish makeover doesn't need to be pricey.

And with back-to-school season just around the corner, this clever furniture transformation couldn't have come at a better time!
It has ample room for her daughter's brand-new school clothes.
