No matter the language they speak or the country they're from, I think it's every child's dream to own a little home of their own. As I remember from my own childhood, some of my favorite games were baking mud pies, playing Mom, and enforcing my made-up house rules.
And of course, one of my favorite places to play "house" was in my playhouse. And like this little girl who loves to dress up, I loved to dream up fantasy worlds in which I was the star.
But as much as I loved my humble little playhouse, it was nothing like the one you're about to see…
However, as you'll soon learn, this charming little cottage isn't just for kids. Adults, children, and animals can all find use within these special structures.

In rural Maine, a family by the name of Pillsbury is bringing fantasy to life with their very special houses.

Husband, father, and longtime carpenter, Rocy Pillsbury was tired of traveling and working long hours away from home. He yearned for a way to express himself as a designer and craftsman, and he wanted to do it in his own backyard.

That's when he decided to start making playhouses — but not just any playhouses.

A lifelong reader of fantasy novels — specifically works like The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien — Rocy knew he wanted to do something outside the norm.

He decided to build Hobbit hole-inspired playhouses. Unique, magical, and a treat to the eye, he knew it would be perfect.

In Tolkien's novels, a Hobbit hole is described as such: "In a hole in the ground there lived a Hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell – nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a Hobbit-hole, and that meant comfort."
And sure enough, these Hobbit hole playhouses are filled with beauty, warmth, and comfort.

When they revealed their first playhouse in 2009, kids were instantly drawn. Every day during their three-day exhibition, they were swarmed with curious children. They hit the ground running, and business hasn't stopped since.

And with the quality of their work, it's no wonder. With their cedar framing, pine roof sheathing, iron door hinges, and screen-and-plexiglass windows, these playhouses are built to last.

But the Pillsburys build more than just children's clubhouses...

Their work also appeals to those of the feathered variety.

Their Hobbit hole-style chicken coops are also a smash hit — but not just because of their beauty.

They're expertly built with cedar clapboard roofing, insulation, removable floor liner, and windows that ventilate and protect the chickens.

Chickens and humans alike love these cozy coops.

The attached run is spacious and easy to clean, an important part of keeping chickens.

The nesting boxes are easy to reach, making egg collecting a breeze.

The entire unit is moveable, too, so the coop isn't a permanent fixture.

When the unit is moved, yards will appreciate the nutrient-rich manure, and the chickens will love finding new insects and fresh pasture.

With many optional features and additional details, the Pillsburys' chicken coops are a fully customizable dream.

In addition to playhouses and chicken coops, they also build cozy, eye-catching dog houses for those with furry friends.

And their craft and imagination don't stop there: The Pillsburys can also build storage sheds, summer rooms, outdoor home offices, pig barns, bus stops, saunas, and adult-sized cottages.

The Pillsburys aim to bring families joy and wonder — and they're sure they can do so for generations to come.

They so strongly believe in their fine craftsmanship, they say their homes can be passed down to their customers' grandchildren.

I can only imagine the amazing worlds kids can dream up in these homes.

These Hobbit holes are certainly like something out of a fantasy!
