Here at LittleThings, we cover a lot of really cool handmade projects — but our very favorites are ones that are crafted from wood.
Yet, in the realm of wood-based DIY, the projects that feel the most special are those that are created from lumber that most would regard as low-quality or disposable.
For instance, most carpenters wouldn’t dream of making something beautiful out of pallets or a small chopped-down tree — like this one clever craftsman who flipped a tree into loveliest cat playground we’ve ever seen.
The thing that makes these particular projects so memorable is that they needed someone with a truly creative eye to look at something most regard as junk and see something more.
Imgur user AussieBattler101 is one of these rare individuals with an eye for transforming trash into treasure. He took an old log in his yard and breathed a whole new life into it.

To begin this incredible transformation, this craftsman first began with an old log.
Before he began cutting, he looked for the flattest section to maximize the amount of wood obtained from the log.
Then he gave the log a rough cut with his chainsaw.
He then put the rough cuts up on a saw bench and locked them in place.
“I had to use a tractor to lift the bigger piece up on the bench. It was that heavy,” he wrote.
Then he began sawing offcuts from the rough cuts of log.
Once he had all the wood cuts he wanted, he allowed them to dry.
He used this routing piece for cut diagonals.
He then used a jig to make sure the right angles were routed.
He then began to assemble his project and test if the diagonals would fit into place.
He got a few of his routed pieces ready to be cut down to size.
Then he began to fully assemble his project.
“Sorry, I jumped a few steps and forgot to take photos,” he said of his project — a bed — as he assembled it.
Next he sanded down the entire frame.
Although a few steps are missing, you can’t deny the beautiful craftsmanship.
“Just needs a mattress and it's good to go!” he wrote right before dressing his new bed.
