As someone who tries to reduce my carbon footprint and hates throwing things away, upcycling has become one of my favorite ways to turn unwanted items into something better — like the time I turned my old vintage suitcase into an adorable dog bed.
Recently, I did a little cleaning and discovered a collection of old blank CDs gathering dust in the attic. Now that music and movies are mostly streamed digitally, these old CDs don't have much use anymore. But instead of tossing them into the garbage, I decided to look into creative ways to upcycle them and found a fun DIY craft. Using just marbles and an old CD, I was able to transform these simple items into a gorgeous candle holder.
I tried it once (and LOVED the outcome), so I have made several more since. Plus, it makes a great talking piece when I have family or friends over. Plus, did I mention how easy it is to make? Here's how it's done.
1. Gather all your supplies.
2. Place the CD on the decorative paper of your choice. Trace a circle around the CD.
3. Cut around the traced circle.
4. Apply hot glue to the CD.
5. Quickly apply the decorative paper directly over the top of the CD before the glue dries.
6. One by one, glue the marbles around the outer edge of the CD.
Tip: Apply glue to the sides and bottom of each marble to increase the strength and durability of the layer.
7. When you're finished with the bottom circle, you'll begin the second row on top.
Remember to keep applying glue to the sides and bottom of each marble to ensure they won't get loose.
8. Next, you'll move onto the third layer, using the same technique.
9. Let dry. If needed, reapply glue in areas that seem fragile or loose.
10. Insert a faux tea light into the marble candleholder and experience the beautiful glow!
Please note: We only recommend using flameless candles, which are an electronic alternative to traditional wick candles because they pose less threat of fire hazards.
I used this latest version as a candle holder to put in my bathroom. It really gives off a beautiful glow and makes it feel like a I'm in a spa. In the past, I've also turned this craft into a jewelry organizer or filled with candy or treats and set out on the table. The possibilities are endless, so get creative.
