I’ve been toying with the idea of trying out crazy, colorful pastel hair for years.
But, while the trend is super-cute, and visible on the heads of everyone from Kylie Jenner to Nicole Richie, I was always way too nervous to try it out for real. I dabbled with a few hair chalks, following the guidance of this genius tutorial from YouTube phenom Kandee Johnson, but I just wasn’t sure about the real deal.
After all, nobody wants a bonafide hair disaster on their hands, like the one that drove this girl to cover her hair in ketchup for a quick fix! That said, all I really needed was the right person to guide me.
That’s where beauty guru IAMKARENO comes in. The vlogger, a YouTube star in her own right, has produced a simple, easy-to-follow tutorial that takes you through each and every step of perfecting the pastel trend. Score!
Her first piece of advice? Friends don’t let friends bleach solo. If you have dark hair like IAMKARENO, and you need to bleach out your strands first, get help from a pro, or at least from an experienced pal. Over-bleached hair isn't cute or healthy, and it will fall out in clumps.
Once that’s done, you’ll need to mix your dye to achieve just the right color. At the end, she shows you all sorts of options, from a vibrant blue to a bold purple, and to the ultra-chic gray-violet color in between. Believe me, you are in safe hands with this video.
