If you think pumpkins are only good for jack-o'-lanterns, think again. While preparing my home for some out-of-town guests recently, I was looking for a unique fall centerpiece. That's when inspiration struck. I decided to make a pumpkin floral centerpiece using a hollowed-out pumpkin as a "vase." By simply carving a hole in a pumpkin, you can display your favorite fall flowers for everyone to see.
These pumpkin centerpieces (done in 30 minutes!) really celebrate the season and bring autumn elegance into my home.
I personally love using real pumpkins, but craft supply stores have craft pumpkins that can be carved as well. It's just good to note that if you're planning a party, you may want to do the DIY project the day before, so the pumpkins and flowers are still fresh. But when you're finished, this centerpiece is sure to brighten any table with bold, fall color.
What You Need:
- Small or medium-sized pumpkin
- Pumpkin scoop
- Fall floral arrangement (real or silk)
- Small metal can or vase (Must be able to fit inside the pumpkin and hold the flowers)
1. Select seasonal flowers in an autumnal color palette. A variety of sizes and colors will make this piece pop.
2. To prep the pumpkin, cut the top using a serrated knife. When carving, draw the knife back and forth as if you were sawing.
3. Scoop out the seeds and strings from inside the pumpkin.
4. Hollow out the pumpkin.
5. Once carved, place a metal can in the center. (If your can sticks out slightly, like mine, that's OK. You won't see it once the flowers are arranged.) Next, fill the can with water.
6. Trim the stems so they are several inches longer than the pumpkin is tall and arrange in the can.
Not only does this craft come together quickly, it will make a lovely centerpiece for Halloween or your Thanksgiving spread.
