When Instructables user AmateurHour bought a new truck, it came with one stipulation.
The sale included a full-size, dead spare tire.
While other buyers might have found this detail annoying, this handy DIY-er instead chose to see this tire as an opportunity.
After a good brainstorming session, this builder came up with a plan: he would use this tire's rim to create an awesome new charcoal grill.
Once he pried his tire rim free of its rubber exterior, he took it to his local shot-blasting facility.
For a small fee, he was able to clean off the rim's rust himself, and the whole process took mere minutes to complete.
Next, this DIY-er primed his clean tire rim.
After the primer dried, he covered every metal bit of his charcoal-grill-to-be with two coats of Rustoleum High Heat paint, designed specifically for grills.
He made sure to fill any significant nooks and crannies with paper towels, so as not to clog them with paint.
Next, this builder turned his attention to the grill's base.
To appropriately support the structure's top, he needed its base to either match or exceed the tire rim's weight.
He decided to build his base out of 4×4's.
Once he assembled and sanded the wooden structure, he covered it in stain and lacquer.
Now, it was time to assemble his grill.
He adorned his tire rim with a steel pipe flange, to hold it upright.
This clever builder covered the pipe's hole with a cap, to prevent future ash accumulation.
Next, he secured the grill base's flange.
With the grill's core structure complete, this DIY-er decked it out with a few additional accessories.
Between the tire rim and the wooden base, this Instructables user's grill quickly grew to be quite heavy.
So, this clever builder fitted its base with wheels, for easier maneuvering.
He also added a little hook to its side, perfect for hanging tongs.
This upcycler fitted his grill's tire rim top with a lower grate, so that charcoal would stay put inside the structure, rather than falling out through holes in its bottom.
With a top grate for holding food set in place, this charcoal grill was ready to get cooking!
