While some DIY projects are quick to start, others marinate in their makers' minds for years — waiting for timing, skill level, and ideal building materials to all configure themselves into alignment.
Recently, after years of dreaming up his perfect project, Instructables user Blackir finally found himself ready to bring his years-long vision to life.
When an old 200-liter electric water heater, ripe for upcycling, fell into his lap, this inventive creator decided to repurpose it into a monster barbecue.
He began his build by prying off his water heater's old outer insulation and sanding it completely clean.
Then, after fitting it with a few new legs, proper ventilation materials, and a hefty coating of heat resistant paint, this DIY-er completely transformed his old water heater into a fantastic new outdoor grill.

All his life, Instructables user Blackir dreamed of building his own barbecue.
So, when he recently came to possess an old, seemingly useless electric water heater, he finally decided to upcycle his lifelong vision into a real grill.
He began his build by prying the water heater's old insulating foam layer free, revealing the underlying metal cylinder.
With the vessel's old outer layer completely removed, this DIY-er got to work sanding off any of the water heater's lingering paint.
For grill feet, this diligent upcycler repurposed an old box spring bed frame.
He positioned the bed frame segments in place by first welding wall brackets to the water heater, and then subsequently securing its "new legs" to those brackets.
Then, this builder cut out part of the water heater's side panel and hinged it back into place as his grill's new lid.
To ensure the grill would properly ventilate, this DIY-er outfitted his new creation with a chimney fashioned out of an old pipe.
He also added an air inlet to the grill's opposite end to improve circulation.
Coated with heat resistant paint, his grill was just about ready to go.
This upcycler added a grilling rack to his barbecue's inner cavity, to keep his food properly elevated during cooking.
He also added wheels to one set of his new grill's legs to improve its mobility.
And just like that, this DIY-er built himself his dream grill — fulfilling his lifelong dream, nearly for free.
Now, he has a huge outdoor cooking surface, perfect for feeding entire parties of people all at once.
Armed with boundless creativity, this upcycler completely transformed an old electric water heater into his ideal barbecue, just in time for summer.
