When You Hear Why People Won’t Adopt These Fur Babies, You’ll Be SHOCKED.

As a former mama to a black cat, I can personally attest to the fact that the stigma around the color of their fur is a farce. Cats are fantastic companions no matter the shade of their coat (sorry, dog people!), but every year, black cats face discrimination by pet owners who associate the color of their fur with folklore, superstitions, and demonism. It’s silly, but it happens.

According to the Huffington Post, studies indicate 13 percent of Americans are wary of a black cat wandering across their path; 26 percent of potential cat adopters said that color mattered to them; and black cats are second to last to be adopted based on their fur color. Those aren’t encouraging numbers when it comes to a kitty who’s looking to be matched with his or her forever home. But as we’ve seen before on LittleThings, black cats are just as lovable as any others.

With this in mind, the nice folks over at The Pet Collective put together a video with eight interesting facts about these frequently neglected kitties. For example:

“In the 18th century, black cats were kept by fishermen's wives because it was believed it would keep their husbands safe at sea.” They're also thought to be good luck for single women in Japanese cultures. See? Who knew?!
