One thing you can say about Lela Burden is that she finishes what she started!
When she was just 15-years-old, Lela was forced to quit school during the flu pandemic in 1918 after all of the districts were shut down. Without an education, Lela knew she had to work in order to make ends meet so she began cleaning homes. Even when the schools reopened Burden was also committed to her work and never enrolled again.
One of her biggest regrets was that she never went back for her degree.
Luckily for her, the Virginia school district, nearly a century later, presented Lela with an honorary diploma at Norfolk's Booker T. Washington High School.
If you are just as proud as Lela as I am, please SHARE this with your friends! Way to go Lela!!
