In my childhood neighborhood, at the end of our street, there sat a boarded-up, dilapidated house that nobody dared to enter. Some said the family left town when their child went missing, too heartbroken to remain in their darkened home; others said it was haunted by the original owner, a young woman killed by her husband on their wedding night.
Rumors and myths were endless and unfounded — but one thing was for sure: none of us were brave enough to set foot inside.
Every day, for reasons we'll probably never know, houses are abandoned. Prized possessions are thrown into boxes or the backseats of cars, doors are left unlocked, and families disappear in the dead of night.
And often it's the objects left behind — the things not important enough to take — that intrigue us most. They can be so telling of the family that once inhabited these now-empty rooms.
Thankfully, some people in the world are brave enough to explore these empty houses. If they weren't, we'd never be able to enjoy incredible photos like these. Those last few really gave me the willies…

This is the overgrown exterior of the old house.
The brave explorer had been aware of it for some time, so he finally decided to venture in.
The entrance still retains its mid-century charm. See the old-fashioned doorbell?
Here's the doorway leading into the living room. The family seemed to like pastels.
The kitchen cabinets were obviously cleared out before the family left.
I wonder what knick-knacks and plants used to decorate this room?
Here's the Frigidaire, the first indication of the house's age.
The old stove, covered with empty jars. Is that a foil-covered dish in the oven...?
Back to the living room. Discarded coat hangers litter the dirty floor.
The roller shades were left behind, and you can see the outline where a picture once hung.
Now we enter one of the bedrooms. Judging by the soft pink walls and floral curtains, I'd bet this was a girl's room.
This room is powder blue, but shares the same curtain pattern as the pink room.
A bright turquoise room. Again, shades have been left behind.
A garment bag has been left in the closet of this room. I wonder if it once held a pretty dress?
The sunporch. Light, airy curtains still remain. I bet a lot of summertime fun was had out here.
Here we see a woman's little shoe, a flyswatter, and what looks like a produce basket.
Here's where it starts to get really interesting: the bathroom.
In the old porcelain tub, trimmed in peeling pink paint, we see old dishes and rags.
Lotions, toiletries, and a shaving razor. Look at those labels!
Roux Rinse and other dated products. This tells us these items haven't been moved in about 60 years.
We venture upstairs to the attic... More pastel paint.
An old mattress? Was this used as a playroom at one time?
Now down to the basement...
Here we see an old water heater, a washbasin, and a strange machine near the back. What is that?
It's an old washing machine! Wow! This house clearly hasn't been touched in more than half a century. Incredible!
