Abandoned As Babies, DNA Test Helps Connect Likely Siblings Years Later

Recently, a Southern California woman named Janet received an email from a stranger living in Wisconsin. At first, she thought the man, Dean, was her long-lost cousin. The more emails they exchanged, however, the more they realized that there was much more to the story.

But let's rewind to 1981, when Janet — known back then as Baby Jane Doe — was abandoned as a newborn baby in a dark alleyway. A kindhearted bicyclist found her and brought her to the hospital. Her story made headlines across the country. Someone even placed a sign next to her bed that read "I know I'm somebody cause God don't make no junk."

Janet was adopted by a loving family who were open about the fact she was adopted. So, Janet registered with an ancestry website and eventually connected with Dean. When Janet learned what happened to Dean in 1986, a stunning reality set in.
