Republican Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler makes difficult decisions every day, but none could have been as difficult as holding her baby girl's fate in her hands. When Jaime was five months pregnant, doctors noticed that her daughter didn't develop either of her kidneys. The condition is known as Potter Syndrome, where the infant doesn't produce amniotic fluid, causing problems in organ development.
The doctor's diagnosis was that it was 100 percent fatal. For them, it seemed pointless for Jaime to carry the pregnancy to term. Jaime disagreed, and like mother Brittany Buell, she chose to fight for her daughter's life.
"We felt very strongly that this is the baby God chose for us," Jaime told USA Today. After doing research, she discovered an unconventional procedure where doctors would inject saline solution into her womb, allowing her baby's organs to grow. A minute after the injection, the baby's chest began to pulse, her lungs began to move — the procedure worked. Jaime gave birth to Abigail Rose Beutler, she was three months premature but is thriving. While her health isn't perfect, Jaime is glad she made the choice to fight.
"If we're able to break through a barrier… totally worth it," she said.
See how Abigail is doing a year later in the video below and please SHARE to wish her the best of luck!
