When it comes to donating to charity, it's usually a case of "the more, the merrier."
There are all sorts of creative ways to encourage as many people as possible to donate. Whether it involves knocking on doors, selling something delicious, or even undergoing a 648-mile walk, it's always worth it for a good cause.
College student Danni Messina decided to use her Twitter account in an attempt to raise as much money as she could for her favorite charity, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Danni informed her followers that she would donate a certain amount for every "favorite" or "retweet" that she received. The idea was to raise more than she would donate herself.
Of course, Danni was only expecting her immediate circle of friends and family to get involved. That isn't what ended up happening.
Instead, the tweet went viral, and she raised a lot more money than she originally expected — or could afford, for that matter.
The tweet that Danni initially shared explained that she would donate a quarter for every favorite and 50 cents for every retweet she received.
What sounded like a good idea at the time really took off.
Before long, Danni had 193,000 retweets, and 446,000 favorites.
With that many retweets and likes, Danni supposedly raised a whopping $208,000.
The only problem, of course, is that a student like Danni does not have that kind of money, although she might wish she did!
The exact number is of course subject to change as more likes and retweets roll in.
Danni didn't just begin her Twitter crusade for fun and games.
St. Jude is a cause near and dear to her heart, as you can see from her response to another Twitter user sharing their personal connection to the hospital.
While Danni certainly can't donate all the money herself, she did start a GoFundMe where people can donate to the cause themselves instead of eating into her nonexistent wallet.
While Danni couldn't really afford all of the money she promised, it definitely got a number of people involved with St. Jude who probably wouldn't have donated otherwise.
All in all, Danni's heart was definitely in the right place, and most people are proud of her charitable efforts — even if they were a little misguided.
Some users even wanted to do their part to alleviate Danny of her charitable burden.
Even if she couldn't really donate that much money herself, Danni showed us that more people want to help those in need than you might expect!
