If there is one thing children and teens are good at, unfortunately, it's finding new ways to be mean to each other. No, not every little kid is a bully, but at this point in time, it seems that we'll constantly be at war with bullying. Sometimes, bullying can hurt feelings so deeply that the worst thing imaginable happens. But Aiesha Ross? She's here to let everyone know that it doesn't have to be this way, and she is so, so brave for this.
Ross was born with many physical malformations. She lacks many organs and parts that make living like a traditionally "normal" person impossible, including crucial reproductive organs. She also only has one kidney, as well as an imperforate anus, which makes her unable to control her bowel movements. She has to carry a colostomy bag, and she uses a tube to empty her bladder. Instead of being sensitive to how Aiesha feels about living this way and the fact that she can never have children, kids at her school thought it would be a good idea to poke endless fun at her instead. It got so bad that she eventually had to switch schools.
One day, her teacher at the new school asked everyone in the class to write a speech on what teenagers need. Aiesha ended up winning the school's speech competition with her touching and inspiring words on her hopes for a "new normal." Her words are wise beyond her years, and her heart is so big and great, it's capable of making great change.
