There is nothing like a mother's love, but when a mother withholds that love and doesn't give it unconditionally, it can be damaging for her children.
Like orphan Xavier, Alex and Brittney's mom was abusive and neglectful, leaving young Alex to protect his little sister as most big brothers would.
"I remember my old mom wasn't treating me nice when I was little," Alex says. "She was having fights. She wouldn't see Brittney, so I'd pick her up and I'd take her to a place where the fighting isn't happening."
Alex suggested that his mother often did drugs. "I saw her doing a lot of smoke and not paying attention to me and my sister."
After Alex and Brittney spent a year in and out of foster care, they met their forever family. Alex admits that the first night was scary, but that it felt different than his other foster homes.
"I didn't have grown-ups that would take care of me like this — love me so much…" he says. The family knew immediately that they wanted to adopt Alex and Brittney together. It took one glance at their photos to know that those were their babies.
Sometimes our happy endings begin with a rough start, but that makes them all the more wonderful.
