In June 2021, Alex Murdaugh told police that he came home to his family's house in Islandton, South Carolina, and discovered his wife and son had been shot to death. Murdaugh was a well-known and successful attorney, and it seems that initially his story was believed.
However, in July 2022, authorities arrested Murdaugh and charged him with two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and now police believe they have plenty of evidence against him.
Authorities have revealed there is plenty of evidence that puts Murdaugh at the scene of the crime when it happened, including a blood splatter on his clothing that indicates his cover story — that he was visiting his father at the time of the shoootings — can't be true.
Some sources close to Murdaugh and his wife have said that the two were struggling in their marriage, and that at the time she wasn't staying at their shared home. Murdaugh reportedly asked his wife to visit his father at the hospital with him, and she agreed to meet him first at their home before driving to the hospital separately.
A friend of Murdaugh's wife reportedly received a text from her that said, in part, "He's up to something."
Since being arrested, Murdaugh has been charged with 90 other crimes that relate to his time as a lawyer.
As People notes, most of these crimes are "alleged financial crimes, including misappropriating money from his law firm, defrauding clients of funds and computer crimes."
He has also been accused of defrauding the family of his late housekeeper of a $4.5 insurance settlement. The woman is said to have died after an unexplained fall at Murdaugh's home.
Murdaugh has pleaded not guilty to every charge, including those related to the deaths of his wife and son.
His lawyers told People, "Alex wants his family, friends and everyone to know that he did not have anything to do with the murders of Maggie and Paul."
