Husband Claims Missing Wife Fell Overboard In Bahamas And Was Swept Out To Sea

Vacations are supposed to be relaxing and restorative. Even as a chronic worrier, I never go into a vacation expecting the worst. In fact, it’s probably the only time I give my type-A mindset permission to fully shut down so I can be present with myself and my family. I’m also braver on vacation: I’m willing to try more things that are typically off limits for me, and I’m admittedly a little less responsible. It’s not the safest or smartest approach to vacationing because bad stuff can still happen even in paradise, and letting your guard down could cost you dearly.

In 2023, 311 people reportedly went missing on the Bahama Islands. Sadly, Michigan wife and mother Lynette Hooker has now been counted among those missing as well, according to The New York Post.

The American woman allegedly fell overboard while on a dinghy and was swept out to sea.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force released a statement saying that about 7:30 p.m. April 4, 2026, Hooker and her husband set out on a 2.5-mile trip from Hope Town to Elbow Cay in an 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy. Police shared that her husband showed up the following day at 4 p.m. at the Marsh Harbour Boat Yard and told someone who has not been named his version of events. He explained that his wife fell overboard with the boat’s keys, effectively turning off the boat’s engine.

Brian Hooker said he lost sight of her after strong currents whisked her away, so he paddled ashore to get help. The unnamed individual informed police, who immediately launched into an investigation in an effort to find her.

People commented on the authorities’ Facebook announcement with skepticism.

“How do you go from Hope Town to Elbow Key,” wondered one follower. “It’s the same island! What 8’ dinghy uses a key to start a tiny outboard? How do you fall overboard in the calmest, shallowest waters on earth and can’t get back into an 8’ dinghy?”

“Keys for a 8-foot hard-bottom dinghy? People reported he swam to shore. Fishy, Fishy,” stated another commenter.

It is worth noting that the Bahamas is under a US State Department Level 2 travel advisory. Officials warned Americans on March 31, 2026, to exercise “increased caution” while traveling in the area stating, “boating is not well regulated. Injuries and deaths have occurred.”

Hooker’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, said she’s not fully aware of what is going on or what happened.

“I have been privy to very little information,” Hooker’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, expressed in a statement to People. “My sole concern is to find out what happened to my mother and make sure a full and complete investigation is performed into her disappearance.”

“There needs to be an intensive review of the facts and circumstances of this tragic incident,” she added to the magazine.

“There have been prior issues brought to my attention, which may be important for any thorough investigation. If this truly was an accident, I can understand and live with it,” Aylesworth later told Fox News Digital. “There’s history of him choking her out and threatening to throw her overboard. So the fact that this is actually happening makes me believe there’s more to the story.”

Police are urging the public to report any information that may assist the investigation by calling 911 or 919 (in the Bahamas) or through reporting to Crime Stoppers at 328-TIPS (8477).
