Locals Surprise Traveling Asylum Seekers With Screening Of Disney’s ‘Coco’ For Day Of The Dead

Asylum seekers traveling through Mexico were surprised this week when they stopped in the state of Oaxaca to rest. Locals greeted the exhausted travelers with hot food and a Day of the Dead surprise.

In honor of the Mexican holiday Día de Los Muertos, locals put together a screening of Disney's Coco for the asylum seekers. The grateful migrants watched the movie while waiting to be served food.

The nearly 5,000 asylum seekers are traveling from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Many are women and children fleeing violence. Everyone attempting the long journey to the US is hoping to find a better, safer life.

Journalists traveling with the group captured the heartwarming moment in photographs, which they quickly shared on Twitter.

People all over the world were touched by the photos. In this time of political strife and personal challenges, it's so nice to see people treating others with such unbridled kindness.

The weary travelers sat outside on the ground while they watched the uplifting movie and enjoyed dinner.

The movie screening was set up by locals and volunteers, and the movie was powered by solar energy.

According to journalist Alice Driver, the volunteers were a mix of locals and NGOs (nongovernmental organizations like the Red Cross) who were providing medical attention.

After journalists tweeted about the event, people were quick to comment their support for the Oaxaca community and the migrants.

Coco was the perfect movie for the travelers to watch, since it focuses on a little boy in Mexico celebrating the Day of the Dead.

The asylum seekers were just in Oaxaca for the evening, the night before the Day of the Dead, before they continued on their long journey across Mexico.

The migrants are still hundreds of miles from their final destination — the US — but the support they got in Oaxaca was touching.

Although there are differing political opinions on the asylum seekers, it's important to remember that many of these families are traveling in search of a better life for their children.

And what better way to support the young children than with a screening of Coco?
