Jayland Walker, 25, was stopped by police on June 27, 2022. Officers claim that Walker tried to flee during a traffic stop, resulting in a car and foot chase that ultimately ended with Walker being shot at least 60 times by up to 13 police officers — a startling detail that raises more questions than answers about his death.
The medical examiner in the case has also stated that he believes Walker may have even more wounds.
Akron, Ohio, Police Chief Stephen Mylett has released most, but not all, of the bodycam footage worn by officers. The shooting is being investigated by the police department.
Mylett went on to state that the traffic stop shifted from being a weapons inspection to a chase when Walker fled, saying, "It went from being a routine traffic stop, to now a public safety issue. And then the pursuit continued."
However, it remains unclear why so many officers pursued one man and why he was shot so many times. Ken Abbarno, the attorney for the Walker family, told CNN, "Each time I've watched the video, it's gotten worse for me. Every movement that I see, every shot that I heard, and every time that I see Jayland, lying on the ground, just gets more and more horrific."
