Captain Jason Haag returned to his family following his second deployment overseas. Sure, he was trained to fight and be strong — but turning it off was nearly impossible.
The Purple Heart recipient may have suffered a traumatic brain injury, but it was Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that proved the biggest challenge yet. Haag didn't care if he lived or died. He started living in his basement and rarely left the house. After 15 years of marriage, his wife reached her tipping point, and their three kids desperately missed their father. But Haag just couldn't break free of PTSD's crippling chains.
As a last resort, Haag called K9's for Warriors. He had heard wonderful things. The program set him up with a German Shepherd named Axel.
The day after he got Axel, something incredible happened. Captain Haag was out of the house, running normal errands.
The progress was rapid and welcomed. Haag began spending time with his children, attending his son's baseball games, and even dropping many of his prescribed medications.
But it wasn't just Haag who needed saving; Axel was one week away from being put down. Had it not been for K9's for Warriors, Axel and Haag would have never met.
Now, Captain Haag has decided to repay Axel by nominated this heroic pooch for the American Humane's 'Hero Dog of the Year' award. If Axel wins, then K9's for Warriors would receive donations to help more veterans.
